September Meeting Recap
Edison Brewing gave us an absolutely perfect space to kick off the Fall season of SODZ! We are so appreciative that they were able to get us in and to be such excellent hosts.
The meeting started with a tour of Edison's brewing facility, followed by our general business meeting led by President Eric Sass. We are gearing up for a fall that is jam-packed with events, so make note of the current events below and keep your eyes out for regular updates here, via email, and on our social media.
But first, the club competition! This month was the pilot of our new September club competition category--German style beers. And wow did folks show up for that. There were twenty-two entries in the contest. Please congratulate our winners!
Total entries: 22
1st place - Victor Aume - Roggenbier
2nd place - Christopher Lepper - Kolsch
3rd place - Jim Sudduth - German Pilsner
Coming events:
October 10: Collaboration brew day at Nocterra Brewing. This is a Monday, but it is a great opportunity to watch and assist with a full brew day on the commercial system at Nocterra. The beer brewed on the 10th, will then be canned and kegged, and distributed beginning on Learn to Homebrew Day in November (more on that, below).
October 17: SODZ October meeting at Goodwood Brewing in Columbus. This is the former Gordon Biersch location down in the Brewery District. The theme for the club contest in October is Fall beers.
October 22: Beer for Boobs. This October is the 10th Anniversary of SODZ's Beer for Boobs competition, which raises money for breast cancer research. The competition site is live, so go get your beers registered and sign up to be a judge or steward! We are also looking for raffle items, so please contact a board member if you have (or know of anyone) interested in contributing to that.
November 5: Learn to Homebrew Day at Nocterra Brewing Co in Powell. Join SODZ, DOH, and HOPS for Learn to Homebrew Day. There will be a location to set up your homebrew gear, and the event is open to the public. We hope to welcome lots of folks who are interested in learning more about homebrewing!
June Meeting Recap
Huge thanks to Restoration Brew Worx in Delaware for hosting our unofficial June meeting! What a great evening spent together with our friends the Delaware Ohio Homebrewers (DOH) and the Homebrewers of Powell (HOPS).
The meeting started with a general intro from SODZ President Eric Sass. Each club in attendance had the opportunity to speak a bit about themselves--maybe each will gain some cross membership! There are certainly no rules about how many homebrew clubs one can be a member of!
SODZ meets the 3rd Monday of each month at a rotating list of breweries and other locations. SODZ typically meets between September and May, with other events announced as they occur.
HOPS meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month, year round, primarily in the Delaware County area.
DOH meets the 3rd Thursday of each month, also about September through May, and they try to offer technical talks at each of their meetings.
Watch out for that third week of the month, it seems!
We were also fortunate to be joined by Zachrich Hop Farm, who will graciously be hosting our summer picnic later in July. They shared that the simplest way to get to their property is to just Google the hop farm. They are located near Mechanicsburg. They will be having their open house that day with live music and a food truck. SODZ members are welcome to hang out through the entire evening.
Vice President, Jason Wing, also spoke about the upcoming Homebrew Con in Pittsburgh, which was June 23rd through 25th this year. Multiple members from both SODZ and DOH were in attendance (check out our social media for some highlights).
Our Club Contest theme for June was American Pale Ales
Total entries: 6
1st place - Jim Sudduth - Too Much CR60 Pale Ale
2nd place - Chris Tudijanac - Hedonistic Harvest APA
3rd place - David Curran - Why So Dark
Congratulations to all the winners!
Mark your Calendars for the September club competition We are thrilled to be hosted by the Germania Society in Columbus. The theme for this club competition will be German style beers. If you plan to enter a lager, it might be time to get lagering!
